THOUGHTS & TECHNIQUE: Q&A WITH THILO WESTERMANN

"Selfie," photo Courtesy of Thilo Westermann

Millions of meticulously-placed pixels--in pinpoint precision--invigorate the floral forms created by artist Thilo WestermannFor Spring/Summer 2015, Westermann's art is transformed into a collaboration of limited-run wearables for EscadaIn an opportunity borne by chance, Escada Fashion Director, Daniel Wingate, happens on Westermann's So What Does Forever Mean? exhibit in Nuremberg, Germany and instantly envisions a partnership with the artist. Where art is applied to fashion, fashion once again becomes artistically transformed in the Escada Meets Thilo Westermann collection. On glass, Westermann's art exemplifies a hyper-realistic rendering of nature, yet on fabric, a woman becomes a part of the magnified beauty on display. Keep reading for my Q&A with the artist and have a look back at the Thilo Westermann window feature...

-WEDNESDAY WINDOWS-

Saks features Escada in a digitally reflective display inside its Fifth Avenue windows; Delfinata dress with orchid still life

Art and fashion embark on conjoined adventures, whether art on fashion (Robert Indiana x Lisa Perry) or art as fashion (Viktor & Rolf). Last Fall, Escada and German artist Thilo Westermann collaborate on a seven-piece capsule collection, patterned off his meticulous reverse-glass etching process. The intricate floral comes alive as his 2 dimensional designs are printed and worn as three dimensional garments. This week, Saks displays pieces from the 'Escada meets Thilo Westermann' collection alongside mirrors and digitized screens in a portion of its Fifth Ave. windows. Keep reading to see the the sensational styles...

ERIK JONES X UNITED NUDE

Erik Jones paintings on display at United Nude, Noho

Painted lines and architectural geometry mingle amongst sculpted shoes in Noho this week. With an opening reception on Friday September 26th, Axcess Art presents Erik Jones at Rem D. Koolhaas' United Nude. Carefully pairing Jones' paintings with UN's collection of colorful favorites, the translated symmetry between art and archetype are mirrored in both mediums' art and artistic vision. The paintings will be on display at 25 Bond Street until Thursday, October 2nd. More photos after the jump.

JEFF KOONS: A RETROSPECTIVE @ THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

From "Dutch Couple 2007"... Dutch Couple (2007)

Banal objects propagate "Art" at the hands of Jeff Koons, the renown American contemporary artist from York, Pennsylvania. As the final exhibit in the Whitney Museum's current locale (the Whitney will relocate to the Meatpacking in 2015), Jeff Koons: A Retrospective is exceptionally comprehensive, displaying 150 iconic works by a single artist across the entirety of the Whitney's Marcel Breuer building. The exhibit documents the full span of Koons' work from 1978 to the present in the following categories: Pre-New, The New, Equilibrium, Luxury and Degradation, Statuary, Banality, Made in Heaven, Celebration, Easyfun, Easyfun Ethereal, Popeye, Hulk Elvis, Antiquity and Glazing Ball. A long weekend in the City and a healthy curiosity towards the construction of Koons' larger-than-life artwork presents the perfect opportunity to trek to the Whitney. Here's a glimpse of what's inside…

CHANCE + COUTURE + CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN

My Desk...My Phone…My Luck has Turned!

A 2-minute email break between back-to-back meetings Thursday yielded an unusually unique opportunity. I was invited back to the Brooklyn Museum for a second time in 2 months--to see Nana, to experience Gaultier and to (potentially) meet a high profile Mystery Guest! A judgement call was at hand; should I muster up the courage to ask my boss about leaving work or miss an unconfirmed meeting with an unnamed fashion industry celeb? It was a toss up, and chance won out.

LISA PERRY + ROBERT INDIANA = BEYOND LOVE

Lisa Perry Flagship at 75th St. and Madison Ave.

Sometimes, it's hard to move on from LOVE. In the case of Robert Indiana, his stacked representation of LO + VE became an instant icon of the 60's counterrevolution, memorialized in sculpture and stamps (and proliferation of unlicensed products). Yet, for the 85-year-old American pop artist, the single widely recognizable graphic overshadowed his other works, until now. From Sept. 26 to January 5, The Whitney Museum presents Robert Indiana: Beyond Love, a retrospective of 95 pieces spanning 5 decades, representing Indiana's illustrated interpretation on survival, injustice and--of course--love. Two streets up, mod designer Lisa Perry concurrently celebrates Indiana's work through a limited edition capsule collection of his bold graphics on her signature silhouettes--only 50 or less of each style are available!
