FAIRY TALE FASHION @ FIT MUSEUM

Cinderella's glass slipper #FairyTaleFashion @FITMuseum

Conceptualized clothing, culled from the pages of fifteen fairytales, prove that crystal chausseurs cannot be confined to the pages of Charles Perrault's Cinderella. In a groundbreaking exhibition that draws parallels between fairytales and high fashion, The Museum at FIT presents red hoods, ballgowns, ruby slippers and other fashion finds buried in tall tales written by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen and others. Summarized by the Museum's press release, "it is evident that dress is often used to symbolize a character's transformation, vanity, power or privilege [source]. Dance & Fashion @ FIT

Dance & Fashion exhibit space [photo by Matteo Prandoni/BFAnyc.com]

Where ballet and Balenciaga unite, dancers float with matchless grace as ambassadors of both their craft and the clothes they display. Blurring the lines between classical and contemporary, movement adds a new dimension of elegance to an otherwise static application of creativity. In salute of dancewear and dance-inspired fashion, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology presents Dance & Fashion, a showcase of 100 pieces from the 19th century to the present curated by Valerie Steele, the Museum's Director. Open to the public until January 3, 2015, the comprehensive exhibit documents the evolution of the traditional ballet costume. Keep reading for the details and photos...

BILL CUNNINGHAM: FACADES @ THE NY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Editta Sherman on a subway train to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden 1972

Parasols and primly preened ladies fill frames of monochrome as "street style" portraiture takes a theatrical twist. Bill Cunningham: Facades at the New York Historical Society showcases an 8-year project pairing fashion, photography and antique architecture. When a grade school girlfriend suggested we venture uptown this past weekend, I begrudgingly obliged (mostly because brunch was on the agenda!). I entered the exhibit expecting an assemblage of ladies flaunting fashions of the day, under the assumption that 'facades' referenced style as a form of self-expression. Instead, I became acquainted with one man's subtle contribution to his "cause" for preservation. It was interesting to see the premeditated posturing of Cunningham's deliberate documentary.

BOK JOY @ THE SECRET ROBOT PROJECT

Pattern by Christian Joy for BOK JOY, a Fashion Art installation at the Secret Robot Project in Brooklyn

Shapes, sparkle and spectacular surprises set the stage of Christian Joy's eccentric costumes. As the exclusive designer to Karen O. of the YeahYeahYeahs, Iowa-native Christian Joy found fame through formulating funky fashions for a crowd favorite. Through October 12th, Joy's artwork is on display at the Secret Robot Project gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn. A spin in a different direction, the installation features textiles and hanging "bop bags" in Joy's signature prints. If you happen to wander to the far West side of Brooklyn, be sure to stop by and say hi!
