STYLE SNAPS : FASHIONABLE FATHERS

Saks Fifth Avenue, 49th St.

Happy Father's Day to new, old and soon-to-be dads! As another year passes, celebrate the firsts, the victories and the wonders of parenthood. Remember the moments that make dad a positive and powerful influence in your life. Send a card, write an email or pick up the phone and remind your old man that someone thought about him today.

Father's day originated in Spokane, Washington at the persistence of Sonora Smart Dodd. Growing up as one of 6 children in a single parent household, Sonora Dodd wanted to celebrate her father, William Jackson Smart. Shortly after Mother's day, Dodd approached her pastor and suggested the day be celebrated on her father's birthday, June 5th. To allow pastors to have time to prepare sermons, "Father's Day" was deferred to the thrid sunday of June. In her pursuit to legalize the holiday, Dodd enlisted the help of groups such as the Father's Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men's Wear Retailers. With commercial promotion and decades of political debate, President Richard Nixon legally recognized Father's Day in 1972.
