Looking Back at 2013

Excerpts from: Shoe Obsession at FIT, Gatsby at Prada, Punk: Chaos to Couture at the MET, Jean Paul Gaultier at the Brooklyn Museum

2013 was a memorable year for exhibiting fashion in NYC. A sizeable shoe exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology's Shoe Obsession in February was followed by a seemingly endless stream of publicity around The Great Gatsby in April/May and an unprecedented number of displays emphasizing queer fashion throughout the year. Punk had a banner year, with a hefty Chaos to Couture exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum and an impressive Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum. Rounding out the category of "fashion," jewelry was the main feature at the MAD's Fashion Jewelry: The Collection of Barbara Berger exhibit and the MET's Jewels by JAR show. FASHION IN FILM @ TRIBECA CINEMAS

Fashion in Film presents the Great Gatsby in 3D

Cool costumes multiply the appeal of movies--think Catherine Martin's glitzy gowns in the Great Gatsby (2013), Paco Delgado's tattered elegance in Les Miserables (2012), Collen Atwood's flight of fantasy in Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Alexandra Byrne's Victorian chic aesthetic in Elizabeth (1998). In honor of the feats of fashion in film, DailyCandy collaborates with Tribeca Cinemas to host a 2-day public film event celebrating fashion in Film. Main events include screenings of Valentino: The Last Emperor, Romeo and Juliet, The Great Gatsby in 3-D and Q&A sessions with influencers of fashion in film including style maven Iris Apfel, documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles and costume designer Catherine Martin.

GATSBY GLAMOUR

Dress Gatsby exhibit at Prada in Soho featuring Catherine Martin + Miuccia Prada's collaborative costumes

Laden with more crystal than a Baccarat chandelier, the mannequins of Prada's Soho store shimmer and sparkle in extravagant style. Earlier this week, Prada kicked off its Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby exhibit with cocktails and celebrities in anticipation of Wednesday evening's movie premiere at Lincoln Center. For 12 days, Prada's Soho store will exhibit the lavish gowns and accent pieces worn in the movie, a collaboration between Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin, Oscar winning costume designer and wife of Baz Lubrmann--The Great Gatsby's writer, producer and director.

-WEDNESDAY WINDOWS-

Tiffany's Fifth Ave Great Gatsby Windows

The belles have long left Tiffany's Blue Book Ball and Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby awaits its upcoming debut. In the interim, Tiffany's Fifth Ave. presents a set of jazz age windows created in cohorts with Catherine Martin, Academy Award-winning costume and production designer. Set against a backdrop of bubbles, bubbly, crystal curtains and chandeliers, countless carats and intricate artistry dazzle in debauchery for passersby. Some of the pieces on display are used in the upcoming film!
