Rebecca Minkoff and a STORY employee prepping a grey MAB for laser printing

Rebecca Minkoff is taller than I imagined… Or maybe it was just the sky high snakeskin cage heels she paired with black skinny jeans and a soft white blazer at STORY in Chelsea this evening. Out to support GE Garages’ Making Things, Minkoff and fashion-minded spectators watch as a laser printing machine etches a grey MAB. A lucky onlooker gets to keep the MAB with a newly imprinted cheetah print.

The event is the first in a series of talks and demos centered around the theme of “making” and the laser printer is just one of many machines (MakerBot desktop replicator, CNC milling machine, and injection molding machine to name a few) accessible to techies, entrepreneurs and curious city folk until October 28. Upcoming workshops include a woodworking demo with AmDC designer Brendan Keim on 10/11 and 10/20, a Scrapyard challenge on 10/21, a rocket-making tutorial on 10/18 and 10/20 and pumpkin carving with PS I Made This founder Erica Domesek on 10/24 and 10/27. There’s something innovative happening almost every night for the next 3 weeks!

"Shadow Puppet," Shortall Design's winning entry at STORY

Look for the spinning circles as you head towards Chelsea. Echoing both the technological and creative aspects of the pop-up, STORY's window features Shadow Puppet by Austin-based SHORTALL Design, the $20,000 GE Making Things Competition winner. The interactive display moves when you move! While you're there, get inspired--store merchandise echoes the "maker" mantra with specially curated DIY kits.
