Close up of Leeann Huang's "Six Course Meal" dress (Spring 2019) as part of the Art x Fashion exhibit at the Museum at FIT

A red snapper on a silver platter--accompanied by a dish of lobster claws, oysters and scattered chandelier beads--rests atop a dress titled "Six Course Meal" by Leeann Huang. My favorite piece of the new ART x FASHION exhibit at the Museum at FIT is tucked in the back corner and embodies the true sense of wearable art. Equal parts couture, sculpture and storytelling, Huang's masterpiece captures the exhibition's central theme: when fashion becomes art, the body becomes the canvas. Keep reading to have a look inside.

At its core, Art x Fashion explores what happens when designers move beyond clothing as function and step fully into expression. Texture takes center stage: beads become brushstrokes, fabric becomes form, and embellishment becomes narrative. Themes of consumption, identity, fantasy, and transformation surface. Volume distorts the human form. Materials challenge expectations. Pieces invite you to look closer, then closer again. The result is a collection of pieces that blur boundaries—between garment and object, utility and imagination, fashion and fine art.

Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, the exhibition brings together 140 works from the permanent collection of the Museum at FIT, tracing the parallel evolution of fashion and art—from the ornate elegance of 18th-century Rococo to the conceptual experimentation of late 20th-century postmodernism. The understated installation allows the garments to take center stage, placing the focus exactly where it belongs: on the artistry of the fashion itself. Be sure to stop by and experience Art x Fashion before it closes on April 19.
