Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses at the Brooklyn Museum

A decade after I roadtripped to Atlanta, Georgia to see Iris van Herpen's exhibit Transforming Fashion at the High Museum, Sculpting the Senses has landed in New York—and somehow, seeing Van Herpen’s work again feels both familiar and entirely new. The exhibition, on view at the Brooklyn Museum, brings together more than 140 haute couture creations with contemporary art, design, scientific artifacts, and natural-history specimens. Visitors can even walk into a recreated atelier and be surrounded by her creative process. Rather than presenting fashion as something simply worn, the exhibition asks us to consider clothing as an evolving relationship between the human body, nature, technology, movement, and the world around us. Keep reading to see inside the press preview....

Setting the scene: Hervé Baley Editions at Magen H Gallery

If furniture could talk, the sharp lines and slim velvet cushions of the Hervé Baley Editions pieces would whisper of conversations between dapper gentlemen--accented by puffs of smoke and slow sips of whiskey. Stylistically, the rigid wood forms and deliberately non-ergonomic designs invite guests to pause and gossip, but not to linger. The Inspired by Metrocard exhibit at the NY Transit Museum Gallery in Grand Central showcases art and fashion made from Metrocards

Clink. Swipe. Tap. New York City's subway-riding Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers will recognize the familiar sounds of getting through the turnstile. While the clink of tokens and swipe of a Metrocard has progressed to a tap of credit or Omni card, each generation of transit technology has left its mark. As the Metrocard retires, a small but meaningful tribute has appeared inside Grand Central Station. The New York Transit Museum Gallery is hosting Inspired by Metrocard, an exhibit of artistic centered around the iconic yellow and blue card.
